Why We Still Need Girls' Nights:

Because friendship deserves a place on the calendar, too.

Remember when getting together with your girlfriends didn't require checking three calendars, coordinating everyone's schedules and planning six weeks in advance?

Somewhere between careers, families, responsibilities and the everyday business of life, girls' night became something we talked about more than we actually did.

“We need to get together soon!”

“We should plan dinner!”

“Let's do something next month!”

And then another month passes.

Not because we don't care about our friendships. Quite the opposite. Life simply has a way of filling every available space, and somehow, time with friends becomes the thing we'll get around to when everything else settles down.

Except here's the thing.

Life rarely settles down.

And maybe that's exactly why we still need girls' nights.

It's Never Really Been About the Dinner

Sure, we love a great restaurant. A beautiful patio, a good cocktail and a menu worth talking about certainly don't hurt.

But think about your favorite nights with friends.

Chances are, you remember the conversations more than what you ordered.

The story that had everyone laughing so hard they couldn't finish a sentence. The unexpected conversation that made you feel understood. The friend who said exactly what you needed to hear without even realizing it.

Those are the moments that stay with us.

Sometimes girls' night is dinner at a restaurant you've been wanting to try. Sometimes it's coffee that turns into a two-hour conversation. It might be a movie, a book club, a Mah Jongg table, a Saturday day trip or an evening sitting on someone's patio.

The location changes.

The connection is what matters.

Friendship Doesn't Maintain Itself

There's a funny thing about adult friendships.

We can genuinely love the women in our lives and still go weeks—or even months—without seeing them.

Not because anything is wrong. Nobody's upset. There's no dramatic falling-out.

We're simply busy.

And while a quick text or a comment on social media helps us stay in touch, there's something different about spending time together.

Being in the same room. Hearing someone's laugh. Catching up without watching the clock. Having conversations that go beyond the highlights we share online.

Friendships need those moments.

They need the spontaneous invitations, the standing dinner dates and the occasional evening when we decide the laundry can wait.

They need someone willing to say, “Let's actually put something on the calendar.”

And sometimes, that someone needs to be us.

You Don't Have to Have It All Together to Show Up

Let's retire the idea that getting together with friends has to be an event.

You don't need a new outfit, a special occasion or an elaborate plan.

You don't have to host the perfect dinner party or find the trendiest restaurant in town.

You can meet for coffee in leggings. Order appetizers and call it dinner. Walk through a farmers market. Browse a bookstore. Take a class neither of you knows anything about.

Some of the best memories begin with the simplest invitations.

“Want to go?”

Two little words that can turn an ordinary Tuesday into something worth remembering.

And if you're the woman who always seems to be waiting for someone else to make the plans, consider this your invitation to be the one who sends the text.

And What If You Don't Have a Girls' Night Group?

Here's something we don't talk about enough.

Not every woman has an established circle of girlfriends.

Maybe you've moved to a new city. Maybe your longtime friends live somewhere else. Maybe your life looks completely different than it did five years ago.

Perhaps you're newly retired, navigating an empty nest, starting over or simply realizing you'd love to have more women to do things with.

Making new friends as an adult can feel surprisingly awkward.

Where do you meet people? How do you turn a casual conversation into an actual friendship? And is it strange to show up somewhere when you don't know anyone?

The answer to that last question?

Not at all.

In fact, that's how many new friendships begin.

Someone walks into a room, takes a seat at a table, introduces herself and discovers that the woman sitting next to her was hoping to meet someone new, too.

Not every introduction becomes a lifelong friendship.

But every friendship has to start somewhere.

A Little More Fun. A Lot More Connection.

There's something wonderful about having people in your life who are up for doing things.

The friend who wants to try the new restaurant.

The one who says yes to a last-minute road trip.

The woman who convinces you to learn Mah Jongg even though neither of you knows what you're doing.

The friend who'll happily spend an afternoon browsing boutiques, going to a museum or sitting outside with coffee.

And the one who doesn't need an activity at all. She's perfectly happy just catching up.

Different women bring different things to our lives, and that's part of what makes friendship so interesting.

We don't all have to be the same age, have the same background or be in the same season of life to enjoy each other's company.

Sometimes the most unexpected friendships become the ones we treasure most.

Put Friendship Back on the Calendar

We put appointments, meetings, family activities and countless responsibilities on our calendars because they're important.

What if we started treating time with friends the same way?

Not as something extra.

Not as a reward for finishing everything else.

But as a meaningful part of a life we're excited to live.

Maybe that means a monthly Dinner Club. A standing coffee date. A book club that occasionally discusses the book. A game night. A girls' day somewhere new.

It doesn't have to happen every week.

It just has to happen.

Because one day, we won't remember how many errands we finished on a particular Saturday.

But we might remember the afternoon we spent laughing with friends, discovering somewhere new or doing something completely outside our usual routine.

And those are the moments worth making room for.

That's What Women on the Go™ Is All About

At Women on the Go™, we believe life is better when you have women to share it with.

It's why our communities gather for Dinner Clubs, book discussions, coffee meetups, Mah Jongg, local adventures, girls' nights and experiences that give women a reason to get out and enjoy life together.

Some women join because they're new to town. Others have lived in the same place for years but are ready to expand their circle. Some are looking for new experiences, while others simply want a few more friends to call when something fun comes up.

Whatever brings them through the door, the idea is the same.

More experiences. More connection. More reasons to say yes.

Because girls' night was never really about the girls' night.

It was always about the friendships that grow from showing up.

And we think that's something worth making time for.
